Behind the Music of Brian Hershey
Cellist and Educator

Brian Hershey is a cellist from Park Ridge, Illinois. He is a student in the Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts - School of Music and a member of the Honors Program at Illinois State University. Brian is an experienced Teaching Assistant with the Illinois State University String Project who has a demonstrated history of working in the education industry. Brian is skilled in Spanish, Writing, Teamwork, Music Performance, and Leadership. He is a strong education professional pursuing a Bachelor of Arts - BA focused in Music Teacher Education - Orchestra Instruments along with a BA focused in Cello Performance from Illinois State University.

Brian has always been fascinated by music. In fourth grade, he picked up the cello. In sixth grade, Brian started studying with Margaret Daly. Now, as a music major, his cello professor is Dr. Cora Swenson Lee.

​

Brian has demonstrated success in the arts and leadership. In high school, Brian was heavily involved as President of Model United Nations and Spanish Club Freshman Representative, as well as being an active member in all four curricular orchestras, including the Chamber Orchestra. Brian also participated Tri-M Music Honors Society, National Honors Society, Spanish National Honors Society, and peer tutoring.

Outside of high school, Brian has participated in various summer music camps. To add, he was a member of the Schaumburg Youth Orchestra Program, holding membership in the Chamber Music Program, Concert Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra.

​

At Illinois State University, Brian currently is serving as the Treasurer / Fundraising Chair of Illinois Collegiate Music Education Association (ILCMEA) and Secretary of American String Teachers Association (ASTA).

​

Brian has taught students ranging from 3rd to 8th grade with the Illinois State University String Project since January 2021. In addition, Brian has taught taught private cello lessons with the Illinois State Community School for the Arts (CSA) since July 2022. To enhance his leadership abilities, Brian is a Music Student Mentor with the Illinois State University School of Music, where he helps make adjustment to collegiate life and Illinois State University for both new and transfer students. Brian plans to continue on his journey in music education to eventually become a music teacher. He also hopes to continue teaching private music lessons, exploring his passion for musicology, conduct youth orchestra programs, and perform in local ensembles.
